Chain case seal
Good afternoon all,
Just a quick heads up required as to best method of inserting the rubber and sealing main chain case . I purchased the up graded version from the club and it looks pretty symmetrical. It would seem sensible to end the seal at the top of the case?
Any tips, much appreciated ( get it right first time is best!)
Thanks ,
Steve

Yes put the join at the top (some members glue it together with superglue but it isn't necessary) . You will probabely have to cut it adown slightly, usually about an inch, it doesn't need to be exact as the seal is very stretchy. You will probabely have to space out the outer chaincase with a washer or two. Take your time fitting it and it'll work really well.

Thanks Dave,
So, put the seal in between the two halves, joint upper most. Tighten up nut to compress seal and fix band.
Regards,
Steve

I made a spacer for the inside and use a half nut on the outside. Has never leaked since fitting. And yes, I did put oil in it!

Yes. Tap the ali band towards the rear with a soft mallet/hammer to settle/seat it as you tighten the nut and bolt to close the ends of the band. You may need to use a slightly longer bolt there as the ends of the band may be spread further apart than previously.

Hi Clive,
I think you’re right, wishful thinking on my part. There’s no oil on the gearbox or engine at the moment ( been stripped down and serviced ) but it’s dripping oil! How’s that happen!
Cheers,
Steve

Re: Chain case seal
Did you fit a suitably thick spacer to the centre stud? If too thin then tightening the nut will distort the outer mating edge causing it to 'grin'.
Did you offer up the two halves before fitting the seal? It won't compensate for too great distortion.
Has the seal become misplaced when fitting the outer half?
(Take no notice of Clive as his expertise only extends to using a hammer or a cartridge of bath sealant ).

Hi Spriddler,
I haven’t actually fitted it yet as I was awaiting the advice you have all provided. The job will be done tomorrow providing I’m not kidnapped to Morrisons!
There is a spacer and the stud appears plenty long enough. Might have mislead you, I was joking re the reference to the apparent leak from the gearbox which has no oil!
All your advice taken on board.
Thanks for advice,
Steve
