Front & Rear Suspension

Post by Harleyboy »

I have a 1955 AJS 16m which I'm restoring. I ran the bike for a couple weeks before stripping to understand what needed doing. I have stripped the bike however I've now struggling with the front and rear suspension units which need overhauling and I don't have the knowledge or experience to proceed. So is there anyone who maybe able to assist with advice and tools which I may need; I'm located in SUTTON, Surrey SM1 (Sth London).

Jampots have movement but would like to strip and overhaul with service parts, look like slight weeping.

Teledraulic have partial stripped however one damper rod bolt can't get it off/out. Stanchions poor state particularly top so assume would replace these along with any bushes and seals.

Or can someone recommend a company whom maybe able to undertake the work.

Thanks for looking and any response I may get, regards RB

Hi

Forks and jampots are easily repaired at home, do it yourself and have a night out on what you'll save.

There's plenty of info on both process' on here, and if you get stuck you can just ask - for example, to get the damper bolt unscrewed, use the tool box screw in the slider drain hole to restrain the damper tube when unscrewing the bolt.

Specialist tooling for the tasks, if you can't borrow it, will be far cheaper than repair labour costs and will be of use later ;)

Replacement stanchions are available and my advice would be to source a set of high tensile steel ones, (others are being offered).

As Mick says, plenty of info to be had on this forum and if you're not aware of it there are several illustrated articles on stripping and rebuilding rear and Teledraulic forks here:

Plus original workshop manuals here under 'Books'.

Your only 78 miles from me approx 95 mins drive, why don't you run them over and we can dismantle them and you'll see what's required and I can explain the rebuild process at the same time. Be wary though, I may try and sell you a centrestand at the same time! :D

Thanks so much for support and comments, will take on board. Forks I've got so far, one damper bolt is just turning with the rod so will try the tool box bolt thing. I have copied/downloaded a process on the forks dismantling and reading just seemed a little over whelming when you get stuck & not sure.
Haven't tackled the rears as am trying to do one thing at a time. With all the things going on in the world I have not yet attended a local meet, will plan one in the next few weeks/Sept.
