Identifying 350 Lightweight fork springs

Post by Roderick »

I'm assembling parts for the front forks for the restoration of a Matchless Model G5 350 cc. The correct springs for this model's 1&1/8 inches Heavyweight forks have a different number(Mainspring - 014950 & Rebound spring - 010360) in the old AMC Spares List from all the other standard AMC models fitted with the Heavyweight fork (all standard twins/singles seem to share the same fork springs, i.e. Mainspring - 021790 & Rebound spring - 022079.).

Can anyone help with recognition by citing:-
a)the total length,
b)wire gauge/diameter
c)number of turns?

Also, is the spring progressive,i.e. the coils were wound closer at one end?

Thanks,
Rod

A correction to some info with my original enquiry!

Viz. the AMC Spares Lists Part No. for the Heavyweight front fork MAIN SPRING for the standard models (excepting the G3C) is actually 021769, not 021790 which the CS/CSR models take.

I notice that the 350 Lightweight used the same fork main & rebound springs as the Model G3C but, unfortunately, that doesn't help me identify what that those springs actually look like!

Still hoping you Lightweight enthusiasts out there can help me recognise what an actual 350 Lightweight fork springs look like.

According to my workshop manual - all models from 1957 - 1964 page 58, the 250cc Scrambler and Lightweight 350cc used the same springs.
Part No. 014950...Free length 11"...Wire gauge .207".

Have you looked in the "Photo's" section, you may just find what you're looking for in there.

That's it! Bingo! I've just measured up one of the springs in my box of all sorts & it's right for a G5. Many thanks!

I just got some new lightweight fork springs for my G5 and they are 13" free length, the old ones are 11", 016526 p/n equivalent of the 014950 seem to have a couple more coils but are slightly thinner material. Seem to compress the same, not fitted yet though. Both sets are progressive types.
