1962 AJS Model 8 Front Spindle Washer

Post by BrianDowning »

Hi All

I have a question regarding the location of the large spindle washer on the side of the left fork. Should the washer be on the inside (drum side) of the fork clamp or the outside?

Photo below with washer outside.

Regards, Brian

Should go on the inside between the nut and fork leg. When you fit the whole thing together nip up the nuts and bounce the forks a few times to get alignment then tighten the nuts.

As the drawing of the spindle in the manual also suggests that the washer goes on the inside I moved the washer to the inside, bounced the forks and tightened evenly. As a result the fender has moved towards the left side and now the right side rubs the tyre. :/

Brian , a few of our Sussex members have lightweights , does your wheel sit centrally on the forks ( tyre equally spaced) in fork
Its not usual for the mudguard to rub a bit on bikes , maybe bridge support bent slightly out of shape

Yes, with the washer on the outside it appears much more symmetrical, especially with the mudguard. While everything looks straight anything is possible. Hopefully I can compare mine at the event in Chiddingly.

Eating a bit of humble pie here, my one that has the original front end that was buried in the shed does have the washer on the outside.

Thank you for the confirmation. There's nothing in the manuals!
