Lightweight Alternator

Post by Trebor160 »

Hi all - I think the alternator on my G5 may be defunct, the windings have broken down. My question is as the Wipacs are hard to get hold of is there a Lucas equivalent or is it better to get it re-wound, if so who would you recomend and what do you think the approximate cost would be?
The alternator is 6v and I'd like to keep this voltage as original if poss.

Cheers, Rob

I fitted a Royal Enfield 6v 3 wire alternator about fifty quid and works perfectly, ebay is your friend.

They are repairable. Often it's just the insulation on the connections that fails, rather than the windings.
Here are some photos of a repair I did: viewtopic.php?f=12&t=24095&p=198815&hil ... or#p198815

I have fitted a Sparx stator to mine and it seems to work ok with the wipac rotor. I think it was £60 new from Tricor, single phase type with a Wassell regulator 12V -ve. I needed to Dremel away a little bit of the potting compound from the stator to make it fit squarely, but no big deal.
