Gearbox, layshaft bush, driveside

Post by vigo »

This resurrection is ongoing and as a winter project I thought I'd try and cure the significant box leak. Stripped and yes someone has been in there before me. Evidence of old corrosion and my list runs to about £120. I need a new layshaft driveside bush (and other stuff). Now here comes the problem, the club spares don't have said bush and an ex empoyee sold the only one in stock so no pattern.

Club spares suggest I try and get some made from my old bush, which I will. I've mailed the club to see if we want to fund 50, so far no reply.
Anybody any suggestions, do you have one in your tin in the shed? Do you have the official drawing?

Yes you did get a reply, I said if you find an engineering company to get 50-100 priced we'd see if we could fund the project.

I'll have a peep on the 28th to see if we have any drawings in the cabinet but it'll be unlikely.

Have you tried AMC Classic Spares or Russell Motors? They should have some layshaft bushes in stock.
You should also be able to get one from a Norton specialist (part number is 041289).
e.g. https://www.norvilmotorcycle.co.uk/gearbox.htm

Make sure you check the "top hat" part is thick enough, as there were some that were made too thin...

Like this!! don't try and fit the thin one as the gear will grind into the casing!!

Thanks fellas,
Really useful, I never considered there could be another supplier, I'll try them.

One more thing now I have the bits I need or at least have decided to change. The main bearing, the expensive one, will not fit on the track of the sleeve gear. It came with an inner track loosely fitted which I'm sure I don't need, this track o/d is 31.44mm and the sleeve gear track is 31.93 almost 0.5 mm bigger.

The solution I see is to have 0.49mm machined off the gear track. But why doesn't this bearing, which looks different to the original, fit? Is this the consequence of non original parts? Has anyone also had this problem?
Don't look too close at the sleeve gear condition, It'll have to do.Image

Hi Mike,

My spare SKF bearing is the same! It doesn't fit either of the sleeve gears in my spares box.
I never figured out why, as I found another good bearing that fit just fine.

The reason is because it is the wrong bearing, the correct one is a special size and sold without the inner track you can get them either here at club spares, amc classic spares or simply bearings

Thanks, Paul! Great info. :D

The fact that both bearings are marked SKEFCO ENU0B is definitely confusing...

Think that us RNU05 and not ENU0B. I got mine from Simply bearings (RNU205) just because at the time club spares were out of stock. Here are pictures of both types original with the brass bearing cage and the Simply bearings one. I also have a bearing with an inner track that doesn't fit!! think the inner diameter of the one with the supplied track is 1mm smaller and that's the reason it won't fit on the gear.

Thanks Gents, I looked back at your old post from 2013 Paul, that's great info. I've just been arranging to have the bearing track machined this morning before I read your post, I'll cancel that. Called Russel motors, nice chap, he knows the bearing and should have stock in the warehouse.
I will now speak with our club spares and ask why they are selling the wrong bearing when this goes back at least 7 years.

The layshaft bush, which I'm trying to get a batch for the club made, can someone give me the thickness needed of the rim. The worn bush I've removed is 4.3mm. That's the bit that prevents gear contact with the case.
