There were two different arrangements, in one the body was located by the tube you mention and the other was where the release body was located by a screw or bolt, the latter is referred to as an improved arrangement.

Those with more experience of these wee beasties can help you further.

Thanks oh wise one, don`t suppose you know where one could acquire one said bolt? Or would any old bolt do, as long as the thread matched? One thing that I noticed was on the tube there is a hole through the centre, does this new and improved replacement part have the same and for what purpose is it there for?
Cheers, basketcase.

The tube has a hole through the centre so the engine can breathe. The bolt doesn't go through the same hole, but is a short bolt within the crankcase, and not in line with the breathing hole, Can't remember the size, but it was a standard bolt.

Sorry I can't remember the exact details, except to say that the exploded drawing generally found has the tube type thingy.

Thanks again, looks like a play on the lathe at work....again.
Cheers, basketcase.

A little more half remembered information has seeped from ze leetle grey cells. The stator for the tube version has one radial hole into which the tube enters to position the stator. The bolt version has two holes, one threaded for the bolt and one plain which lines up with the crankcase hole to enable the engine to breathe, care must be taken to get the stator in the right location. The point is, do you have two radial holes in your stator?.

I had rather hoped that someone with more knowledge than I on this subject would have chimed in by now.

hi basketcase,
had the same problem when i rebuilt my g2.
does the stator you have, have a threaded hole in it? and does the breather tube have a thread on it? if so that is the modified version.
the old type was just a drilled hole in the stator, and a plain tube bolt with a thread at the top that screwed it into place on the crankcase.
i still have the old set but they are a bit worn, i was going to sling them.
regards, alan

Hello Basketcase
sorry cant help with any hands on with this one
however i can repeat a quote from the manual
it may help

The crankcase breather tube 042221

On engines after 8979 an improved type of release valve is used. The stator is retained by a short bolt below the bearing housing. When refitting this stator the recess should face the engine sprocket side of the housing.

The new valve cannot be adapted to earlier type crankcases.
end.

good luck b-o-n

Thanks all,
When you mention the `stator`,do you mean the spacer into which the bolt goes?
I can`t check at the moment as the engine is at the workshop and I can`t get up this week due to work commitments.
At the moment I have an old bolt, which is far too long, holding the spacer in place as the `bottom end` ie the cases, is fastened together.
So will I need to fabricate a bolt and drill a breather hole in it? or can I get away without drilling?
The breather tube I purchased from AMC Classics has a thread on it, at the hexagon end but won`t even fit into the hole in the crankcase.
I`m sure that the stator has two holes but as I said the engine is built up at the bottom end now and I`m sure I don`t want to strip it down again to check!
The cases are the original ones to my `bike, a 1965 model, as confirmed by the club.
Now I wish that I had farmed this job out to a specialised firm!!
Cheers, again, basketcase.

The bolt is there purely to hold the stator in place, and doesn't need a hole throught it. I can't remember what went in place of the tube, but what ever it was it had to have a hole to let the engine breathe.

The stator is the large bush that sits between the main bearings, the rotor, also between the bearings rotates with the shaft.

hi again,
if you want, i will go to the shed tomorrow and take a photo or two of the three parts that are in question, it may give you a better idea of the setup.
regards, alan.
