Lightweight wheel rim offsets

Post by Roderick »

I measured these tonight & thought they might be useful for someone else:-

I acquired these wheels 8 years after they left the factory & have stored them unused & unmolested for the last 52 years. The rims are very true & without wobbles. I am pretty sure they are still as they left the factory - apart from the rust, that is!

Offsets measured with a straight edge laid across the mouth of the brake drum – distance between straight edge & rim.

Wheel Rim off-sets measured for 1961 Matchless G5 350cc Lightweight:-
FRONT WHEEL RIM = 5/16 inches
REAR WHEEL = 1 & 5/8 inches (Exactly - all the way round the rim. Beautifully built wheel by the factory)

Wheel Rim off-sets measured for 1961 AJS Model 14S 250cc Lightweight:-
FRONT WHEEL RIM = 11/32 inches
REAR WHEEL = 1 & 11/16 inches

The width of the above rims measured was 2 & 3/4 inches in the case of the 350 front rim and 2 & 23/32 inches for both the front and rear rims on the 250. Modern pattern replacement rims widths may be different from these in which case the figures I have given for offsets would need to be adjusted to take account.
