oil leak from fork leg

Post by Milano »

Hello members , I have a 1959 model 14 recently acquired with the front forks completely rebuilt, however oil is leaking from the Damper tube retaining screw, i would like to take it out and replace the fibre washer but if i disturb it can the damper move and not allow me to screw it back in place ?
This is on the right leg by the way .
Any advice would be welcomed, thanks .

It sounds like you've the heavyweight type forks with alloy sliders. You may find that the damper tube rotates but if you remove the drain screw you can hold the damper with a sharp pointed tool such as a scriber or small screwdriver. Some replace the drain screw with a toolbox lid screw which has a sharp point. Otherwise it should stay in place with no problem. You're lucky not to have the Francis Barnet type front forks!
