AJS M31 .. left exhaust v sooty .. right exhaust clean
Took the left exhaust off to fit a modified type centre stand ..
It was thick with carbon, which didn't surprise me, as I felt the mixture was v rich.
However, when I took the right hand pipe off to investigate the stiff kickstart I found the pipe was clean ..
First thought was that the right hand cylinder was not firing, but the plug is quite sooty, not so much as the left one though ..
It'll be a while before I can investigate (got the tank and saddle off to play with electrics, as well as as still fiddling with kickstart, but would appreciate any thoughts to mull over while doing other work ..
Thanks ..

Do you know if both pipes had been on the bike the same length of time?

Hi, G ..
Bought the bike very recently restored (not perfectly) .. neither pipe shows any sign of blueing ..

Is the plug on the left side oily? If you look down the plug hole can you see any oil on top of the piston? I'm thinking maybe a broken piston ring on that side. My 650 is always slightly more sooty on the left side.

Sooty left sides seem to be common with the twins.

Just a thought - could it be related to starting up straight after sitting on the prop stand for a while?

I think I'll put it to the bottom of the list till it's all back together and I've fiddled with the carb to see if I can get it running better ..
Thanks for your thoughts ..
