This is from the 1987 motorcycle mechanics article which is the best guide... It doesn't have to be in 2nd gear to fit the outer cover, but it puts the quadrant roller in a decent position to get the cover back on.

A case of wiggling it together to get this pin in the hole in the quadrant roller

Thank you S and JB ..

I'd been working from the Neill book and, though it doesn't state it, the implication is that the mechanism should be inserted before before fitting the cover, in dry runs, I found that v difficult ..

Tomorrow is scheduled for 'assembly' day ..

You'll actually find it easier to assemble with the 4th gear selected.

Seems I've lost all my old natural ability ..

Back in the mid 50s, I was in the RAF in Germany (Junior Magician Engine Fitter) .. a nation service erk in my team bought a German 2 stroke bike with the gearbox internals in a cardboard box (why? Dunno)

With no guide I assembled the box and he ran the bike with no problems till he ended his service .

Don't think I could do it today ..

I guess you don't just attach it like a photo then?
Otherwise... Post it on YouTube and put a link to it?

Good Stuff... On my G12, mine returns about 3/4 of the way and then relies on few vibrations to make it all the home :)
