May I ask, what is the current thinking on fitting 'paper' gaskets .. dry, or a light coat of hylomar or hermatite like goo?

I also use grease to 'oil' the gasket surface both sides before fitting , making sure both surfaces are clean before assembly

Had wondered about that, but thought that the oil may make a capilliary route for oil leaks ..

The dreaded bodger has struck again or has Fred Dibnah commented , the back street mechanic.

Got the new X ring installed .. the kickstart shaft looks good so hoping no oil leaks ..

Have had a dry run reassembly and the kickstart now returns under its own power .. πŸ‘

Which leads to the next problem (s) ..

On various attempts to reassemble, (dry runs) the gear change double pawl has flicked out of position .. is there a foolproof (Taidproof} method that prevents it doing so?

Secondly, when assembled, I seem to be able to select first and return to neutral but can't get any other gears.. have turned the back wheel ..

I don't want to get it all together and filled with oil only to find it doesn't work ..

Thanks for your patience ..

I've never worked on an AMC 'box (too modern for me) so as guide there are several articles in this link to the Archives on stripping, overhauling and reassembling one which will be of help:
