This is where we're at folks. The unit's back on and was giving the occasional spark. I moved the extra earth so that it was in direct conduction with the head. No difference. Hold onto the plug and earth myself (yes I'm stupid) and I get a bit of a jolt; nothing to cause too much distress. Resort to suicide mode and put a screwdriver directly into the coil ht output. Jesus, Mary, Joseph and the little donkey! Eeeeargh!! Every kick without fail. Perhaps it's the ht cable methinks so I put the cable back in and stuff the screwdriver down the plug cap. Eeeeargh!! every kick. Is every plug duff???????

Any suggestions, apart from find a psychiatrist, most welcome.

most plugs are not duff , but once you have a misfire , or run too lean /rich it does not take much to leave a deposit on the ceramic that will earth out through the body rather than across the gap
If you have the right equipment you can measure the resistance to earth on the plug between center cap connection and body , i just cant remember the values
its very difficult to clean a modern spark plug successfully unlike in the old days

Out of curiosity...
How were spark plugs cleaned in the old days?
What is the problem with cleaning spark plugs these days?

garages used to have bead blast kits to clean the carbon or a brass brush but that does not get deep down in the ceramic

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/284849116344 ... Sw4pxiom7v

Unless the ceramic is absolutely clean , there will be some tracking and loss of performance , but our old engine are less sensitive and have lower spark energy that modern engines . But on the other hand the combustion and mixture is less well controlled so carbon build up is worse that a ECU controlled engine running ideal air fuel mixture and timings

Id rather spend the £2.50 on a new plug than clean a plug

Progress, I think. Positioned the trigger by the unit and flashed the fuse. A healthy spark. Onwards and sideways!
