Front brake centralisation

Hi All,
Could you give me some tips on centralising my front brake.
Am i right in thinking to apply the front brake lever and hold it on while the bottom fork legs nuts are tightened ,then spindle nut tightened and finally tighten the brake plate nut, then the brake lever can be released.

I've always done this with the wheel spindle in the vice. Slacken the cover plate nut. With a long tube pull on the brake lever to put the brake on hard. Tighten the cover plate nut. That's it, done.

You don't say which year/model but the principles are the same.

The fork end caps and spindle nuts play no part in centralising the shoes.
Like Dave, I've always centralised the shoes with the wheel on the bench.
It's also important that the shoes are set correctly within the drum.

If you're interested in improving the brake you may find my post from some years ago useful. It makes a noticeable rather than dramatic improvement but a few feet saved in an emergency may be vital.

Don't forget to leave the r/h spindle clamp loose and pump the front suspension down a few times to assist the forks to align in their natural action, before tightening the clamp. Hope that makes sense!
