Does anyone know what voltage the alternator should charge at, mine does not seem to be charging, any ideas where I start to check

Have a look in the Archives for the Lucas stuff on this:
http://archives.jampot.dk/book/Workshop_manuals/
or see it here for most of the alternators of the day:
http://www.brightsparkmagnetos.com/libr ... /index.htm

It isn't always that simple to figure out what is happening, but by following some of the steps outlined by Lucas you ought to be able to establish whether it's the alternator, or the rectifier or some other wiring problem.
First, though, check the wiring is connected as it should be, that wires aren't dangling due to breaks at connectors and so on, and that they are all intact at the switch in the headlamp shell. Problems in the primary chaincase area are pretty common!
