Advice please on fitting a return spring on my 1955 G3LCS (the bike never had one when I bought it) I can see from the parts book the spring I need but on doing some research in previous posts another member had a similar query a while back and was asked if he had the 'Spring Tension Bracket' fitted on his bike, could somebody tell me what part No. that is and looking at the photo it fits under the Brake pedal fulcrum, is that correct?
Cheers Jim
Oops.- Just done a bit more research and believe the part is 022314.

Re: Brake pedal return spring
There isn't one on a pre '56 model. The return spring acts against the pedal stop on the lower frame rail.

Thanks Dave, just looked in the 55 parts book and couldn't see it listed, the spring I need is 021700.

Re: Brake pedal return spring
That is correct Jim and it is listed in your 55 parts list.

Re: Brake pedal return spring
How strong should the return spring be?
I don't feel anything until I'm actually really braking heavily ..

Re: Brake pedal return spring
Strong enough to return the pedal? The pressure under heavy braking is surely from the brake shoes not the pedal return Spring. Disconnect the brake rod and see if the spring returns the pedal to the stop. If it does it is doing its job. The brake shoes have their own (two) springs to return them. Make sure the pedal and brake arm are greased.

Re: Brake pedal return spring
That's what I meant .. been years since I rode a bike, but in the car, i can feel resistance from the pedal before the pads make contact .. with the bike I don't feel the pedal until the shoes are in contact with the drum. so wondering if the pedal return spring is weak..

Re: Brake pedal return spring
See my earlier comment, so long as the pedal returns I would be inclined to worry about something else, I could give you some pointers from my bikes........
