1956 Matchless 350

Post by Ezmerelda1 »

Just fitted new clutch and springs. When the clutch lever is pulled in I can hear plates chattering. Is this correct please? Also at times it grinds going into gear but not always

Just to clarify 'new clutch'..........just the springs, friction and plain plates or the basket as well?
and..........does it grind in all gears or only when going into 1st from stationary?

Sounds like a little too much play in the adjustment or the cable.

Sorry to be pedantic, but into all gears when riding or just going into 1st from stationary?

Have you replaced the outer primary cover and oil? If not that suppresses much of the 'normal' chattering which will be be there to some degree.

Have you followed the instructions in the manual and the tips (freeing the clutch etc) given in reply to your post a couple of weeks ago on the same subject?

See here:

EDIT LATER.......
These comments are not very relevant now in light of you last update......e.g. chatters in all gears etc.

It chatters in all gears but doesn't crunch all the time thanks. Do you mean when riding pull the clutch in once before changing gear then again when changing gear? Like the old double the clutch in cars? ๐Ÿ˜

Hmm, very odd. There shouldn't be any chattering at all when going along in gear with the clutch engaged.

Presumably you have bought the correct plates from Club spares, Russells or AMC Classic Spares?

Have you followed exactly the instructions in the manual here:

http://archives.jampot.dk/book/Owners_m ... ingles.pdf

which says on page 43 .........(Ignore the last 4 instructions from: Engage top gear etc. as you haven't removed the clutch basket).

Thanks for the info it's a bit different from the manual where it says tighten springs until they are flush with the outer plate.
