Where do these spacers go in a 1949 rigid frame model 18

Post by Invicta »

I have a lot of different sized spacers and studs and bolts in my box of bits of my 1949 model 18, some of which are for the engine plates and others I have no idea where they fit or what they are for, (if indeed they are part of the bike) I have viewed the diagrams on the site , but there is not one for 1949 and although some of the parts match the 1952 rigid diagram most do not. I have checked my parts book but these spacers do not seem to be listed. It would be great if there was a parts book that listed them and their sizes

This is what I have : Spacers 1" OD with 7/16" hole 1/2" wide four of , 3/8"" wide one of. Spacer 7/8" OD 5/16" wide one of.
Spacers 7/8" OD with 3/8" hole 13/16" wide one of. 5/16" wide one of.
Spacer 13/16" OD with 3/8" hole 1 9/16" long one of. OK these I think are for the engine plates somewhere, but the following are a mystery :-
Spacers 7/8"OD with a 21/32" hole X 31/32" wide one of. 25/32"wide one of and one 3 1/2" long.
Spacer 1" OD 25/32" hole15/32" wide one of.

Studs 5/16" dia. X 4 7/32" long one of. 3/8" dia. X 4 11/32" long one of . Stud 3/8" dia. X 6 3/8" long. Stud 7/16" dia. X 4 1 one of3/16" long
Bolts 5/16" dia. X 4 7/32" long with a thin head and nut. Bolt 7/16" dia. X 5 1/4" long.

The only spacers that I have been able to positively identify are the two that go on the stud under the magneto platform. Any help with finding the locations of the others would be greatly appreciated. Being a 1949 model there seem to be a lot of one off differences for that year only, due perhaps to the introduction of the swinging arm frame . I do not know why they made so many minor changes to the rigid frame though. Cheers Dave .

the thin head bolt is probably a bolt that holds the engine in place, the flat head sits behind the oilpipe entry and exit point.

Hi

The long one goes between the centre stand legs and the two short ones either side

Not on a rigid Mick, perhaps they're for the footrests?

Whilst looking for something else I've come across this list covering '46, '48 and '50 singles dimensions of bolts, spacers and studs which may help identify some of them for your '49........

Thanks Spriddler. I have found out where the spacers with the larger diameter holes go, between and either side of the the engine plates on the footrest bar. I hope that from the diagrams that you gave the link to I will be able to sort out where the others fit, (shame there was not one for 1949), If not I will fit the engine plates and the crank case and see where the gaps are. For an engine and frame that appears to have stayed the same for years it is surprising just how many small differences there are .
