I have been persuaded to take on a total build up, the bike having been delivered to me in 4 crates of bits, the only part intact is the gearbox !
so far after laying all the bits out, 85% are for the model but there are also parts for a twin, plus there is ht coil ignition and a newish looking Lucas Mag SR1, but all I'm looking for at the moment is what is the oil capacity for the Chain Case, ( I'm a long way from the filling stage yet )

Up to to bottom of the lower chain run when everything assembled. That way it gets splash rather than emersion which could cause emulsification of the oil.
Standard SAE 50 oil is fine although others may make their preferences known. Oil is a wonderful topic for controversy on this site :o

Hi Sam, Its a bit vague, no sight glass or dipstick ,I don't want to over fill. 2 pints ok ? Peter.

Hi again.
It is not volume but level in chaincase which determines amount of oil.

page 24 - Chaincase Check level of oil when machine is standing vertically on level ground
when level of oil should be just below bottom edge of inspection orifice (7). Fill up if level is low.
page 50 - fill case with fresh oil to just below the inspection cap orifice.
Replace screwed inspection cap and other parts in reverse order.

Hi Peter

I'm often in D&G, at Minnigaff. I'm not much good at model history but I thought there was a change from mag to alternator after 1956? Someone else will correct me if wrong. If I'm right, you have a spare SR1, which I've found to be a very good piece of kit.

Hi Jonny, Thank for your reply, I have a query on this SR1 Mag There's only one wire out of it and that's the HT Lead, so how would you stop the engine when running ? The engine No. 61/16 40099 Frame No. A781323 according to the book it shouldn't have a Mag, only coil / points but I have both in the box of bits ! but I don't have a separate point set for the coil. In the book "Matchless & AJS " all post war road singles & twins
Restoration , on page 65, I have that type of timing cover. At the beginning of the book there's a page warning you of trying to do a build from boxes of bits, Pity I didn't have the book before I took this project on !

Use the valve lifter to stop the engine.

Hi Dave, Thanks for the info, Is that the official way with the SR1 mag or should there be another ? I can see that would work ok. just expected a button or something.
