Dear Fellows,

I have acquired a nice 1941 Matchless G3R, Engine Number is
41/G3R 21665.

I search the web to find info on this particular model but failed, there are lot of info on G3L model but I did not find for G3R, also where to find the frame number, are they below the fork yolke? or somewhere else.

Any help will be highly appreciated.

I seem to remember that our knowledgeable contributor 'ITMA' has mentioned on these
Forums that the 'R' denotes that a 'Roller bearing', is fitted (on the timing side axle I think), instead of a plain phosphor-bronze bush. It doesn't denote 'Racing' - much to the disappointment of excited owners!

Someone else will have advise re frame number as I know little about pre-war bikes, but it may help you know that after 1946 the frame number was always STAMPED into the downtube below the seat. The raised digits on the cast headstock/steering head are the casting number of that component.

Another question, where to find a engine serial database of matchless motorcycles and is bearing is this the only difference between G3L and G3R, i see lot of picture of G3L and they seem identical in almost every aspect.

Most of the roller versions have probably been replaced by a full length bush by now. I presume they're the same as the oddball roller as the later compy motors.Anyone have one for comparison?

I sold two on ebay a few weeks back, they are different from the later ones

otherwise G3L and G3R are exactly the same bike.

Pity, out of curiosity i wouldn't mind a picture of one to see the construction.

wait till the weekend I might be able to find another, or at least half of one; I also have an inner race for a later comp type if any one wants it,

Thamks Itma, curiosity satisfied. Wonder why they dropped the idea, and were they exclusive to war models. Seems like a good beef up idea.

To answer my own question they were fitted to war models and at least the'46 350 and 500's.Christians Archives supplied the answer. The inner rollers and track was 7s 10p and the outer sleeve was 4s 6p! Don't s'pose you'd sell me one Itma at original price?
