Which raises something I have wondered about for a long time .. in the design offices of AMC, Vincent, Enfield etc .. were they able to calculate the carb details, or did they guestimate it all, build the engine, and then on the test bed and road testing, work out the optimum sizes?

Gotta be best guess to start with? Basic calculation based on swept volume and compression ratio, then test ride and adjust?

I don't know of carburation specifically... a lot of design is an evolving process based on what went before, I bet there are many components on our classic bikes sized with never a calculation done
