1952 AJS Model 20, 500cc twin

Post by Rosy »

On the D.R.Classic web site there is a rather nice 1952 AJS Model 20, 500cc twin but I notice there is no sidecar lug or head steady lug, the head steady being a bracket. The comment list the frame & engine as original, I don't question that, I am wondering if a frame would leave the factory like that or would some previous owner have de-lugged it for some reason?

Original I suspect as there were none, the head steady arrangement for early twins was a clamp and 2 bracket arrangement before moving to a cast lug.
Richard Gaunt knows his AMC stuff very well and if its advertised as original you can bet your boots it is. He's no shark.

That is such a nice bike, I looked at library photo's and images and couldn't find another that was without a sidecar lug or head steady lug. I came across a 1950s 500 cs single with no Sidecar lug, but no twins. I'm just curious I'm certainly not doubting anyone. Back in the early 60s I would rather shamelessly admit to de-lugging a few of these machines.

For 1952 there was no sidecar lug and the twin head steady was clamped to the front downtube with two separate stays. So it sounds like its right. I you search in the pictures file you will find a picture of my unrestored 1952 Mod 20.
