TAPOX

Post by bunners »

Morning All
TAPOX? do any of you learned chaps know how to remove this stuff?
I applied this to the inside of my newly refurbished Matchless tank having read of its superior qualities for E10 protection,
I read and inwardly digested all the relevant instructions more than once before starting.
Using an old electric whisky of SHMBO I have to believe the two pack is well mixed, sloshed around tank and left to cure at the
correct temperature with the recommended air movement per instructions.
Left it for four weeks before putting in a small amount of fuel (E5) it has now started to blister.
Again, any ideas how to remove the damned stuff? :?: :?:

I believe Tapox is produced by Fertan who can supply 'Sealeater' which they say removes all tank linings. P'raps ask 'em?

Here's their product write-up.......

That's very odd as I've got 2 tanks sealed with the stuff and have been for years and never had any blistering at all!
I will say that the stuff does have a shelf life and if it's been sitting in a warehouse for a while maybe that's a cause.

Just checked Por 15 its a sealer not a remover unless I have not read all the blurb, and that looks absolutely lethal to use. :o :o

Apologies I was indicating that it was a sealer that worked, most solvents to remove sealant will also remove paint, but the best tri-clorethylene is no longer available due to its carcinogenic nature.
Possibly acetone will work but I have never tried it.

I used the Fertan sealer remover and it worked very well. The tank was for repainting so I don't know if it would ruin paintwork. I then used Fertan rust converter. I didn't re-seal the tank and it doesn't leak.

During my apprenticeship in the early 60's at a R/R, Bentley and Jag main dealer I spent a great deal of time up a stepladder leaning over a girt great galvanised steel tank the size of a chest freezer bubbling with hot trichlorethylene and lowering wire baskets of filthy parts into it. The fumes certainly cleared my sinuses.
