Re: Frame year identification
Thanks guys for all of the help, the seat lugs are horizontal and I have checked with images in the service manual and it looks the same as diagrams. I sent off payment for frame dating certificate, not sure how long it takes though.
Thanks again, greatly appreciated. Steve.

Re: Frame year identification
Things like this can get confusing Clive. there is a stud on the saddle, this goes through the top of the spring fixed with a nut. The bottom of the spring has a leg hanging down with an eye, through which a bolt for each spring screwed into each side of the horizontal tube. ( no studs on the tube )
So fixing the saddle to the frame was the same for prewar WD and at least 1946/47. I am referring to prewar AJS , as WD Matchless became an AJS frame. post war could be AJS or Matchless. Frame rear ends change in 1938, 1939 & 1940. Most 1939 AJS frames were prefixed with an X.
The frame number in question is not listed for a WD Matchless. The frame number in question was used for a 1940 AJS model 26 and can be proved. It would have also been used for a 1946 AJS or Matchless which factory records could prove. That would still leave the question, 1940 AJS or 1946.
Saddle mounting being the same for both we need to spot something else that differs. tool box on the 40 AJS fitted between the Y rear guard stays, On 46 matchless the tool box front end fitted on the frame. So has this the tool box lug making it 1946?
Prewar used the spring with the leg, 1946 used a barrel spring and L brackets, early WD used spring with the leg, later WD same as 1946.So fixing the saddle to the frame was the same for prewar WD and at least 1946/47. Re: Frame year identification
I know what you mean about the security code just had to enlarge it. The club does hold some information on 3262 although it is unclear from your post if you want that or 2362. Anyway give it another try. If you are successful you will need to pay £5 to see the info.db133 wrote: ↑Wed Sep 15, 2021 8:45 am I was looking fo frame no 2362 on this :

Re: Frame year identification
Hi
I gave it quick try and the security code did not recognise the characters typed as displayed, (ie as capitals), typing the letters in lower case worked.
Maybe worth a note if this is the norm.
Regards Mick

Hi All there is a problem with the online system at this time so please don’t use it. The webmaster is away until next week when it will be fixed.
