B52 Gearbox and Semi-liquid Grease

Post by spookefoote1956 »

Does anyone use this product in their B52 box and if so which one would they recommend and could you share your observations please?

Cheers, Chris

I use straight SAE50 mineral oil in my three Burman B52 boxes. ( 1954, '55 & '56 vintage)

Dave do you reckon I can replace the gaskets in a GB box without having to take it out of the bike.

Hi Chris

You can fully strip a GB gearbox in situ, just remember to loosen the output sprocket nut before you dive inside ;)

Good exploded view of the GB on the Draganfly website:

I stripped one in a stand on the bench but yes, you can strip it completely in situ. Better if you can get the bike on a lifting workbench. It will save a lot of bending down.

Only required for pre '49 Burman CP gearboxes due to old design. Castrol, Morris etc. all do semi-liquid Grease of equal effectiveness.

My '49 CP is fine with SAE 50 as all other later Burman boxes as stated below by other members/users.

The only reason I imagine you are asking is because your gearbox leaks oil? So you could try earlier spec lubricant to see if it helps or spend more time and money with a rebuild to replace the oil seals.

Yes you can replace the gaskets with the box in place.Mick, you don't need to undo the sprocket nut as all the gears can be left in place to only replace the gaskets. Chris, are you sure it isn't leaking from the main seal?

I replaced all the seals when I rebuilt it. I suspect that the casing faces are not true and so probably need some attention. I was hoping to try the semi-liquid grease first to see if that would work; but I don't want to risk damaging the gearbox if no none else is using it in theirs.
