I fitted an AMC gearbox to my '54 G3/LS as it was all I had available at the time . I bought it with a load of other parts, amongst which was a complete 1960 M18 bottom end. Is it likely that the AMC gearbox was originally from the same bike?

You could get some idea of the year of an AMC gearbox via an excel file. I have gather a few numbers and there is a pattern to be seen.
Gearbox numbers of some bikes do not fall in numerical order should be ignored. Most of the bike being restored may not have the correct gearbox to match the year. Here's an example of just a few numbers I have gathered.
