Re: AJS 16ms engine number
Hmm, well the base of the cylinder looks thinner, and the number on it is a casting or part number. Looks more like my 57 16MS.
However I've no idea why you are missing the number on the crank case.
Don't worry, someone will be along soon to answer!
In the meantime, what year do you think the bike is, do you have any history/ a v5?

Re: AJS 16ms engine number
Apparently, some dealers were supplied with unstamped crankcases (and frames) when the customer's was irreparably damaged.
I believe this was also the case for the WD 350's to be used in their repair workshops.
It's unusual in my experience to have a number stamped on the cylinder base flange as they were normally raised numbers which were the part number of the (raw) casting before machining, as seen in Andy G's photo.
It may well be a mix of parts and years so a pic of both sides of the bike might put the engine into context with the bike and help as a clue.
Does the V5 state the engine number? The club holds the factory dating records and if you submit the frame number can probably tell you the date and marque of the bike when it left the factory and most likely the original engine and gearbox numbers.

The frame number on the V5 is correct but can't find the engine number bike registered 1959 according to V5

Re: AJS 16ms engine number
The engine number line on the V5 for my '54 bike shows the complete year, model and engine reference number as stamped on the crankcase. E.g............... 54/G3LS 25866
According to Bacon the engine number on your V5 fits within the range for engines from Sept '59 (4756) to Sept '60 (7979).

Re: AJS 16ms engine number
Have you checked that the gearbox number hasn't been erroneously recorded as the engine on v5?
Oh, cancel that..I reread the thread:
So you have a number as stated on v5, but can't find it anywhere on the engine.
Spriddler's suggestion sounds most likely that the crankcase was replaced but no change made to the registration.

The 024078 stamped into the cylinder base is the same on my 1959 model 16 engine
